CBT with Bipolar Disorder

Judy Beck and Cory newman have authored an article on CT and other psychotherapeutic approaches to Bipolar Disorder which is available at Medscape (http://www.medscape.com/viewprogram/4003?src=mp). There's no charge but you have to register if you aren't already registered with Medscape.

Re: CBT with Bipolar Disorder

I wonder about the adaptations of both CBT and IPT to bipolar disorder. At those points where it comes down to advice to regularize one's rhythms and to reminding oneself of reasons to stay on medication, is it still (in the former case) IPT and is it still (in the latter) CBT?

Re: CBT with Bipolar Disorder

If all that that the approach involved was advising people to stay on a consistent schedule and take their meds, that would be neither CBT or IBT, just good advice. However, CBT with bipolar disorder includes the full range of interventions used in treating depression, plus education about bipolar disorder, plus lifestyle adjustments, plus work on improving medication compliance, plus work on relapse prevention, etc. CBT interventions (such as identifying and addressing dysfunctional cognitions) are used throughout all of this. Yes, it still is CBT but some of the points that are covered are also covered by other approaches as well.

I'm not familiar with IPT approaches to bipolar disorder but I imagine that the same points would apply there as well.

Comparing Various Approaches to Psychotherapy with Bipolar Disorder

A concise review of empiricalloy-supported psychotherapies for bipolar disorder can be found at Madscape - http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/537113?src=mp. CBT does fairly well.
