First of all we think that those who are sexually abused use self mutilation as a form of relief. This relief is obtained through the cutting of the skin to direct the pain of the past trauma, to the place of the mutilation. It seems a bit out there, but I have seen where someone who has been sexually abused for a number of years, uses this method as a way of coping with the pain that person feels in their heart. They seem to think that it takes their mind off of the pain they are feeling internally and directing it to a pain that they are better able to control.
For the body piercing, some are trying to pull off any piercing done to the genitals and those who pierce their ears all the way around (into the cartilage). Myself, I think ONLY body piercings of the genitals would be considered mutilation, but some of my other colleagues disagree. I feel that piercing such a sensitive area such as gentials, must have an underlying reason..Why would someone intentionally put a hole into such a sensitive area unless, as I said before, it is a way of gaining control over their bodies. I guess this is kind of a shot in the dark, but that is what research is for, making assumptions then proving or disproving them.
