I have to agree with the good Doctor on this one, as well as Monica. I can't imagine we have lost all possible ability to think rationally in such situations. Assessing the situation from an active mindset with the intent for finding the truth, rather than just an inclination, tends to be the key. Slow and easy brings forth the communication you seek as well as the rapport that establishes a healthy connection for psychological safety of open discourse. Best of luck,
