I'm a 35 year old female novice submissive practicing sexual power exchange. AKA-BDSM although I do not practice receiving pain. Recently, after a sexual encounter with my partner, I had an episode that the bdsm community refers to as "subspace". It lasted for a full 24 hours....I was not able to drive, concentrate, basically was not "there". I've done research to learn more to find out exactly what happens in the brain with not much success. I've heard its an hypnotic state coupled with an endorphin high.....like the endorphin high a long distance runner might experience.
I've also heard it's a disassociation mechanism. Has any research been done on this? I've also heard that alpha waves are affected like what happens in hypnosis!!? Any info concerning this would be greatly appreciated.
