I am the Director of an outpatient chemical dependency treatment program in downstate NY. My colleagues and I are intrigued by the possibilities in cyber-counseling, especially related to working with the alcohol or drug abusing person who is ambivalent, but contemplating the idea that there use of alcohol or other drugs may itself be a problem. This population is markedly resistant to approaching an addictions professional face to face, but may be more open to establishing a dialogue through e-mail or on-line chat. Another population we think might benefit from this approach would be individuals who have established abstinance and initial recovery, are engaged in self-help, but seek on-going support and guidance in relapse prevention. Many people are not able to access traditional face to face counseling due to the financial constraints imposed by managed care.
I will continue to follow discussions on this site, and thank you all for many ideas, links, and referances.
