You said, "I'm asked to do something that I feel is unethical or that I don't personally agree with (do no harm) then I decline the work." "Unethical" or "I don't personally agree with." hmmmmm...This leaves a lot of room for OD folks to maneuver in and still create considerable harm to folks at the bottom of the hierarchy in the organization and to the world community. How do you feel about the WTO? That's a specific values question that would help define what you personally "agree with"....and what you would feel comfortable doing as a consultant to say, Monsanto. You get my point: The more flexible you are in your values, the easier it will be to "join" and get the contract. I use "join" in the sense of creating a match--and matching management is essential to getting the contract, no matter how you do it, by acting, manipulating, or by just having a "natural match"---it's always a matter of matching values. Management isn't going to hire you if you are not matching their values. Period. You really can't avoid this question. If you attempt to avoid this question, then you are imaging. Get my point? OD folks are expert in slipperyness (rationalizing)---especially to themselves--that's why I say they are imagers. They have to be to get that contract!!! Imaging includes a tremendous amount of expediency, rationalizing, overlooking critical thinking....that's what OD folks are masters at. And they are also masters at saying, "Hey, that's not what I'm doing." (Denial) Got to as you say "in order to sleep at night"! That's why I no longer do OD! As a licensed family therapist, I cleanup the mess that these folks leave behind: scapegoated, emotionally abused employees. I'm frankly, personally very disappointed in this "profession."
