Everyone who begins working for an organization, does so with an already established set of interpersonal, relational, and coping skills. In many cases these skills have been learned somewhere else, and reinforced for long periods of time. Unfortunately, as an OD practitioner, these skill sets are not necessarily effective for the workplace. Consequently, we spend large globs of money on trying to "change" behavior, when in essence, we cannot realistically change a behavior in 4 hours/1 day/etc. that has been ingrained and reinforced for years. My question rests in: Has anyone been involved in any research or activity in which interpersonal, relational, and coping skills are FORMALLY taught beginning at an early age (4th/5th grade, with the intent that at the point of entry into the workforce, these same students will have achieved a high degree of effectiveness in the above-mentioned skill categories, consequently, training dollars and time is drastically reduced thereby saving organizations billions of dollars annually?
