wow! this discussion proves the point that when people communicate with each other one never knows how their words will be taken! i will now throw my little two-cents worth in... it seems quite normal to me for a therapist to say to his or her client something along the lines of "i want to let you know that my spouse is ill and i may have to cancel some appointments or may have some "off" days - i want you to get what you need out of our sessions and not take any of this personally or my off days as your fault. if we find that this causes problems in our therapy i would like you to let me know so we can figure out what to do." this seems to me what a responsible therapist would do and sounds (to me) like what this therapist did or at least tried to do. i think someone posted that thought - the therapist did not want the client to think that any cancellations or "off" days where his or her fault. imho, it is good for most clients to see the therapist as human and not as above having the normal problems or concerns of life. self-disclosure can be a powerful tool if used correctly!
