I am hoping some fellow professionals can help me answer a question put to me by a friend that I am not certain of the answer. The question concerns a therapist in private practice hosts a website for people with mental illness to offer each other support. The therapist does not provide counseling of any kind at the site. It is a place created for the general public to offer one another support. The therapists private practice and the website are completely separate entities. The question presented to me was - is it a violation of the ethical code for the therapist to invite a client to be a co-sponser of the site? My initial reaction was that it creates a dual relationship. The more I thought about it the less sure I am. I would welcome input from others.
