That position would be a lot more defensible if it were just the insurance company's money, but it's not. It's mine. The money comes from the premiums we all pay, and which go up when diagnoses and services are misrepresented. It's not even an issue of dipping into their profits, since the profits are a relatively small portion of the premiums paid. Then there are the government payers like Medicaid, Medicare, and state mental health agencies. That's my (our) money, too. They don't just print it, they take it from me and spend it, one hopes, for the public good. I don't remember any majority of legislators granting permission to spend our very scarce tax dollars, which I happily contribute for the care of severely mentally ill folks who are woefully underfunded, or my insurance premiums, on people with far less need.
