"I used to think it [psychotherapy] was more, until I was hurt...." Psychotherapy is just that, therapy. There are many exercises or models of therapy that have been developed to change feelings, or perhaps consciousness: CBT, EMDR, psychoanalysis. They are technique, things to do, but they aren't cures. It's a therapy, like physical therapy, which include in its orthodox mix heat therapies, hydrotherapy, and exercises, many borrowed from yoga these days. But, outside of the medical model yoga, weight machines, and aerobics classes,chiropractics, and acupuncture are also a form of PT. Certainly, outside of orthodox psychology there are similar therapies that are intended to bring about emotional change. Meditation, acupuncture, hypnosis, exercise, vitamin therapies, fringe psychotherapies like NLP and rebirthing. PT and psychotherapy, are exercises that may or may not bring about improved health. They exist within orthodox medicine. But what must be kept in mind is that they are techniques. They are exercises nothing more or less than that. They are in a sense massage. One massages the body and the other the mind. Psychotherapy is but one route to well being and enlightenment, perhaps peace, if one is lucky.
Now I am getting off of my own topic, but at one point I also was struck by this idea. I had also thought of psychotherapy as, well, psychotherapy. Cause effect. Medical model. Then one day I took a close look at the word "therapy".
