How would emdr proceed in regards to a person believing he/she should not have been born. The person knows on an intellectual level that he/she is not responsible for his/her own birth, but, somehow deep within feels responsible for being born when he/she really had no right to exist. I've come to realize that I hold such a belief and it isn't connected to one specific memory. I have various memories from age 5 onwards which include witnessing domestic violence (do not connect with feelings re that); hospitalization - not connected to violence but around which there are some abandonment issues and I am now beginning to connect to feelings associated with this; the experience of being bullied in school - again, beginning to connect with the feelings around that. With increasing awareness I'm now identifying beliefs about myself and decisions I've made which come from the past. The belief that I'm somehow responsible for being born and that I had no right to be born, to even exist, seems to have been made before any of the memories noted above were experienced. Those experiences perhaps served to set that belief more firmly within me, but, the belief already existed. So, can emdr be used to challenge and change such a belief/decision and, if so, how would it be done/proceed if there is no memory attached to the time the belief/decision was actually made.
