My guess is that there are so many discussion groups online now, that the population of those using usenet has declined substantially. Ask your average internet user what usenet or "newsgroups" are, and they won't know. That attrition process has resulted in a filtering of users who go to newsgroups. If your estimates are accurate, then the people who now still know about and use the newsgroups are... well... less than desirable. I don't go there much anymore myself, so I don't have any first hand experience with how they have evolved. There are at least half a dozen, well-publicized online groups that discuss cyberpsychology. This is one of them. How are the multiple opportunities and self-selection process affecting this group?... An interesting question! I think the posts here are quite interesting, though this forum does tend to move at a slow pace. Rather than being a "discussion group" per se, I sometimes think of it as a sculpture of ideas that people contribute to and that slowly evolves over time.
