There have been times when I have wished/needed to know if someone posting using a pseudonym (?) is actually someone I know. It's surprisingly easy to spot, even if they are trying to hide it. Also, some people being anon deliberately drop subtle clues as to who they are (I do this too) so people who know them will know it is they. I think it is surprisingly easy to spot truthful people vs. untruthful. I could be using less than scientific skills at knowing these things but I would say that though it is possible to be almost electronically anon (if you try quite hard) it is more difficult to be personally anon if you are doing more than very trivial interaction.
