Yes, it's often possible to gauge much about a person based on how they write and what sorts of words they use. Accountants may write differently than lawyers who may write differently than a chef. In one case, I was able to closely deduce another's profession based on how he wrote. I guessed he was a law school prof. He was a high school teacher who had completed law school and recently become a lawyer. For me, however, online exchanges have diminished my tendency to make certain assumptions about people based on their chosen profession. I've met several people who did not fit neatly into the mental stereotype I envisioned for their profession. I once met a homeless woman who spent time online at the local library. It gave me cause to wonder if her online world afforded her escape from her real world.
