I publish a troll-related web site and have exchanged e-mails with a few trolls. Reasons/motivation varies. Some are relatively new to the online world and find it fascinating to "play around" because they think they're anonymous....veritable Wizards of Oz until somebody draws back the curtain. A few expound on the virtue of "anarchy," believing they're doing their part to ensure people can discuss *whatever* they wish to discuss, in *whatever* newsgroup they wish. It seems pretty illogical to me, since there are over 15,000 newsgroups and the reason many of them were established *WAS* to discuss specific topics...I guess that means I could never cut it as an anarchistic troll. In some cases, believe it or not, people troll for what they perceive to be beneficial reasons...to stimulate discussion in newsgroups. I've seen it happen, with newsgroups where many lurked but there was minimal participation...until trolling began and suddenly people appeared from out of the woodwork to respond to the troll (and perhaps form something of a common bond with others?) Then there are a FEW people who've been around Usenet for many years and keep an eye on several newsgroups. When some people become too overbearing--attempting to monopolize or control discussion--they may make an appearance and prod/poke fun at the one who seeks control. Some also believe (whether rightly or wrongly) that people should accept that others will say things they disagree with or are offensive to them. So, in an attempt to "desensitize" -- or encourage others to use filters -- they post intentionally offensive stuff. I haven't read much of "Poopee's" stuff but it appears there's some self-effacing humor there...I suspect she's doing it largely for the laughs, and the "fun" of it.
