Hmmm....just thinking about this..."nice to live in a culture where we don't judge people by their looks". Seems to me..you would be wishing that we were all blind. Now don't get me wrong...I'm just using fat as an example, as it was mentioned by Kate. But we do and should use visual clues to protect ourselves from others of potentially threatening character ....murderers...rapists...etc. Like we use visual clues when we notice someone doesn't look us in the eye...just as we use aural clues...when someone speaks in a theatening manner with undertones of violence etc. Oh I know what you are saying...but by using "looks" to judge others...doesn't it mean that we work at keeping those looks in order...the image...as we do the voice...smell...mind and so on. Just some thoughts.
Isn't one of our "protection" mechanisms based on using our senses to make judgements about others characters...a need to use all clues offered us....to make a value judgement. Surely the visual is important as well...doesn't it tell us of someone's character (maybe not in the instance of physical deformity through whatever cause)...but to me ...someone being "fat" tells me that they are lacking in self control and possibly self esteem. Fat is definately different from large body type...and we all know the difference.
