Lindsey, we welcome your questions and interest in learning about our theory. We believe that the ideas in our theory are applicable to every day life because we believe that people are always trying to make sense, consciously and unconsciously of their world. People have unconscious plans for achieving their goals. This would apply to specific goals like learning to sing or math and reading. We think that there are beliefs about themselves and the world around then that get in the way of all learning. In your example of singing the problem: it could be an identification with other members of their family who can not sing, it could be in deference to the idea than mom is the one who sings, it could be I am too stupid to sing, if I become a great singer than I will take the spot light away from my brother who needs to be the star in the family, etc. Control Mastery Theory helps us to unravel the belief system than is influencing us to structure our lives. There are many family therapists who find our theory useful and we have a video on doing family theory that is available through our office. Please visit our main web site at www/spfrg.com!
