Question: This is a question about a young male in mid twenties and living in residential placement. The Team (staff) at the residential facility has suggested that in an effort to motivate this young male to socialize and carry out his daily goals that they want to use the Mother and Father (BECAUSE THEY MEAN THE VERY MOST TO HIM) as the WEAPON in this interdisiplinary action plan to support the young male to become more socially active and appropriate. Recommendations are as follows: Discontinue long distance telephone service. (This would stop communication with the Mother and the Father and other family members until a good day when the young male successfully completed his goals and socialized.) He would than receive a fifteen minute phone card) This young male has very high level of social skills,he enjoys his work environment and his vocational staff, social functions such as dances and dining out and has participated in special olympics for many years with honors. This young male has many acquaintances through school, job, socials, special olympics, etc. This young male keeps in touch with his family and friends and being in touch is part of his heart and his spirit of life. The Mother and the Father, Brother and Sister-in-Law are the heart and sole of the young male. The historical family relationship is honor and identity to this young male. The telephone was the very tool used in development of this young male including long distance services. The telephone skills developed with this young male could save his life and the life of others. What will happen to this young male when he can not communicate with his Mother and Father and Family?
