A Dialogue With Control-Mastery and Developmental Systems Self Psychology
9:00 A.M. - 4:30 P.M.
UCSF Laurel Heights Auditorium
San Francisco
This conference continues the long tradition of the San Francisco
Psychotherapy Research Group of dialogue with other related
perspectives. We are pleased to offer this exciting new dialogue with
the developers of Developmental Systems Self Psychology, Morton Shane,
M.D., Estelle Shane, Ph.D., and Mary Gales, M.D., all former or current
co-presidents of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los
Angeles. Their new Self Psychology, Developmental Systems Self
Psychology which is set forth in their 1997 book, Intimate Attachments,
Toward a New Self Psychology, Guilford Press, integrates the ideas and
empirical findings from attachment theory and draws from the related
disciplines of neurobiology, ethnology, longitudinal attachment
research, and infant observational studies.
the San Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group, Joseph Weiss, M.D. and
Harold Sampson, Ph.D. Their Control-Mastery model is set forth in The
Psychoanalytic Process: theory, clinical observations, and empirical
research, 1986, by Weiss, Sampson, and members of the research group as
well as in Weissí 1993 How Psychotherapy Works, both of Guilford Press.
These presentations will emphasize their latest clinical and theoretical
ideas based upon clinical experience, research evidence, and the rich
contributions of many members of the research group.
The dayís events will feature talks by Drs. Estelle Shane, Mary Gales,
Morton Shane, Joseph Weiss, and Harold Sampson, with ample opportunity
for audience questions and discussion. The afternoon will feature a
detailed case presentation by Dr. Kathryn Pryor, with responses from
Developmental Systems Self-Psychology and from a Control-Mastery
Perspective presented by Dr. George Silberschatz. Dr. Suzanne Gassner
will join the presenters in a lively interchange of ideas in a final
panel discussion focused on common ground and differences. Open
discussion and questions with the audience will complete the day.
Moderators for the day will be Dr. Jessica Broitman, Jane Jordan,
L.C.S.W., and Dr. Judith Pickles, Ph.D.
