I totally agree, and I feel there won't be any convergence until attempts are made to develop a general psychology. One reason that psychological theories can remain provincial is that there are no attempts made to address wider social issues from those same theoretical viewpoints. As inadequate as Freudian theory is, Freud at least recognized that one couldn't have a valid psychological theory if that theory was capable of handling only therapeutic issues. The theory must be extendable to an understanding of "normal" human behavior, too. Included must be an understanding of human history and of cultural differences. Obviously that's no small undertaking.
