Hello and thank-you for inviting me to present Carolyn to you. The unfolding case material will respond to many of your very thoughtful and fascinating comments. I would, however, like to respond to the question regarding prior treatments. Carolyn's parents had put her into treatment at 8 yrs old for about a year once a week, telling her that she was too difficult at home and wanted too much of her parents time. She reported to me that she hated that therapy, and that the therapist made "interpretations about me and my behavior that made me feel bad about myself. That's all I remember." The parents had also gotten her into a multiple times/week therapy during college with a very traditional therapist who Carolyn had experienced just as the prior discussant has guessed, as over-intellectualized and fundamentally uninterested in her and as a stand-in for her parents.
