Interesting discussion. The hippocampus is a site of many different 5-HT receptors. According to M. Meaney and HP Herman, the hippocampus may have an indirect role in regulating neurohormonal stress response emanating from the PVN, i.e. the paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei (that is specifically, CRH secretion). Research (via M. Meaney, ER de Kloet, and JP Herman) has demonstrated in the rat, that 5-HT receptors seem to be modulated by stress stimulated glucocorticoid secretion. If I were to guess, I would say that SSRIs may play a role in regulating the 5 HT receptors in the hippocampus, and this may serve to indirectly regulate the neurohormonal stress response of the PVN.
