Obviously, there are no easy answers. I refer you, though, to a book called "Health Behavior Change - A Guide for Practitioners" by Rollnick, Mason and Butler. The premise of the book is to meet the patient where they are and negotiate rather than confront. The methods are not proven to be effective through research as yet, but it is a very interesting concept. Good Luck.
