Martha, A good resource on this topic is The National Council on Patient Information and Education (NCPIE) www. talkaboutrx.org. They have a good report entitled "Prescription Medicine Compliance: A review of the Baseline of Knowledge" pub 1995. Extensive bibs. are also available from them. I am very interested in this topic. After 28 yrs. of clinical work in mental health, I am alarmed at the rate of non-compliance in all areas of medicine. It results in poor patient care and substantial unnecessary costs. I work now for Health Metrics Partners, Inc. www.healthmetr@aol. We are beginning a project to help behavioral health companies improve compliance through identification of best practices through a systematic measurement strategy (assessing clinical, financial, patient and staff outcomes). Later we hope to use the same strategies to improve compliance with medication regiemes in the tx of asthma, hypertension, diabetes, the elderly, and other illnesses. Betsy
No silver bullet for this problem has been identified. People are working on it from many angles. We hope to make a significant contribution through our efforts.
