The GHQ is the General Health Questionnaire developed by Goldberg in 1972 as part of a research project into psychological/psychiatric presentations in primary care practice. It is generally acknowledged as the best scale for screening of psychological problems in the population and has been extensively used for outcomes assessment. There are a number of versions GHQ-60, GHQ-30, GHQ-28, GHQ-12 and all seem quite good at screening for mental health issues. Sensitivity and specificity are generally found to be excellent. Basically, if you are looking for an outcome measure that is cheap, easy to use, and freely available you can't go past the GHQ.
