Has CBT much to offer somatisers?
Philip Kinsella · 1/21/00 at 4:54 pm ET

I find very little of interest on somatisation in the CBT literature. I encounter these patients quite alot and they are difficult. Here are some questions and I would really welcome comments.
    1) What is the role of unexpressed emotion. Is it present in most of these patients? Should it be formulated in terms of a dysfunctional assumption such as 'if I express emotion....' Is it usually linked in with a fear of weakness?
    2) How much does symptom monitoring and processing play a part in maintenance as it does in hypocondriasis?
    3) How strongly do we need to consider the impact of the benefit and legal system in the maintenance of these problems.
