There seems to be some confusion. If OCD is associated with altered metabolism in the basal ganglia, and if SSRIs normalize basal ganglia metab. and reduce symptoms, then would you NOT expect any other treatment (CBT) that reduces symptoms of OCD to also normalize brain metabolism? Do you claim that CBT can NEVER alter the brain, even though CBT alters behavior? If the brain mediates behavior (which it does), and if psychotherapy alters behavior, then it should alter brain function as well. If anything, these findings should help persuade people that pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy are simply two different ways of obtaining the same goal.
We should all work to eliminate this false dichotomy of "biologically based" Vs "psychologically based." Whether or not a brain abnormality can be detected in association with a particular psychopathology is only limited by our knowledge and technology.
