Hi Karen,
I wanted to have a look in the WEB to the MAGNANT people in USA & found your references among numerous other ones. We knew through the Mormons references book there was numerous MAGNANT in the US. About 800 named in France in this book, though probably more than that.
I have a strong interest in tracing the family story of the MAGNANT in the US. Your help would be great if you have any precisions, references, family "tree" or details about the first MAGNANT in your family, when, where he came from ?!
To summ there are 2 main badis of MAGNANT people in France in terms of origin...
1/ MAGNAN without the "T"....means people who were making the silk in the Lyon Rhone area (east center France). Places where silk was made were the "MAGNANERIES". Maker was the "Magnan". It is not the origin of our mutual family name.
2/ MAGNANT with "T". Us.... One main origin. It was one of these small jobs of itinerant people who were going on the roads to propose their specialized services. They were itinerant until they settled in various places as they met a woman or for any other reason. That is why you find this family name in various regions of France. And even some towns like "MAGNANVILLE" in Paris suburb...or villages called "Magnan". The "MAGNANT" job was all the "boilers" work, boiler-making, "tinmans"...
3/ One branch of my family (we did not trace all branches) left France (LIBOURNE near BORDEAUX in 1880 approx for QUEBEC & there are about 80 MAGNANT living mainly in Montreal & a few in the US that we know are our direct cousins: Near Texas, & New-Jersey).
4/ Our own french family was settled in CHARENTES which is the COGNAC region, though the family was in the wood transformation & trade from early 1800. My grand father was in TOURAINE (LOIRE VALLEY) from 1900. I settled for 10 years in LIBOURNE 20 miles from BORDEAUX city. After a master & Doctorate in business Law in Tours city I have created 2 businesses of international wine trade of french wines & spirits for now 10 years (mainly BORDEAUX wines). Dealing in the US & CANADA but not everywhere yet !... I am married & have one girl of 9 years old & one son of 4 years old. You can see how we look like on our web site WWW.easynet.fr/viniparrainage on the last page.
Short introduction... No hurry in your reply if you feel like giving us of your news. It will be a really great pleasure.
Very friendly yours. Amicalement !
