View Full Version : Biederman Scandal

A demand for equity is a human instinct, whether spun into a legal philosophy by John Rawls or called with some affection, a "cheater detector" by evolutionary psychologist, Leda Cosmides. Such is reflected by our intense rage when someone cheats or gets more than he acknowledged or more than he deserved and by our skill when assessing contract violations.

Thus, the success of Frank Raines, Jamie Gorelick, Jim Johnston, Chris Dodd, Barney Frank, and BHO in milking $90+ millions from Fannie and Freddie elicits moral indignation and demands punishment. These characters, however, are now integral players in our new leadership. Even Hillary, the woman who was fired upon when landing in a hostile area, with no more experience in the State Department than she had in the Executive Branch, and bought now on her terms after she hung out on BHO's doorstep and waited for her invitation to the party, is now praised and included as our new Secretary of State.

Now I learn of accusations toward psychiatrist-scientist, Joe Biederman. Biederman was and is a significant investigator for research on Attention Deficit, Hyperactivity Disorder, bipolar disorder, and the medications used for their care. An editorial in the NY Times throws a pie at him for taking $1 million from a pharmaceutical company. The editorial also urges that Washington make rules and levy fines.

The irony is overwhelming...

Editorial

"...Now, internal drug company e-mail and documents that surfaced in a lawsuit have sketched out what looks like an unsavory collaboration between Dr. Biederman and Johnson & Johnson to generate and disseminate data that would support use of an antipsychotic drug, Risperdal, in children, a controversial target group.

"The various documents indicate that Dr. Biederman repeatedly asked a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary to fund a research center at Massachusetts General to focus on children and adolescents with bipolar disorders and that the company provided almost $1 million. Disturbingly, one of the center's publicly stated missions, along with improving the psychiatric care of children, was to 'move forward the commercial goals of J.& J.'

"The company also drafted a scientific abstract on Risperdal for Dr. Biederman to sign -- as if he were the author -- before it was presented at a professional meeting. And it sought his advice on how to handle the uncomfortable fact, not mentioned in the abstract, that children given placebos, not just those given Risperdal, also improved significantly."
